Zusammenfassung
Parenting behavior has been shown to play an important role in family research. Based on the classic family stress model and family investment model, a substantial body of research has documented parenting behavior as an underlying mechanism explaining the indirect impact of family background on children’s developmental outcomes. Given the multidimensional nature of parenting behavior, its measurement, however, varies enormously in different studies. For example, some shed light on the domain-specific parenting behavior for its specific effect, others drew attention on the frequency of joint activities. With this context, this presentation provides an overview of different forms of parenting behaviors that mainly load onto the quality of parent–child interaction or the quantity of joint activities. Drawing on different national samples, this presentation particularly elaborates on how different forms of parenting behaviors in the early years affect the relation between family background and children’s developmental outcomes.
